Iron Deficiency Chlorosis (IDC) is a common problem when soybeans are grown in the calcareous soils of the Red River Valley. An iron chelate solution has the potential to significantly improve yields in fields that have moderate or severe IDC. However, many iron fertilizer products are available in the market, and their relative potential to prevent iron chlorosis and to increase the yield varies with soil and climatic conditions. The main objective of the experiment is to compare the efficiencies of different foliar iron fertilizers on recovery of IDC severity and soybean yield.

Final Project Results

Results indicated that applying foliar iron fertilizer after the appearance of IDC symptoms did not increase yield, irrespective of the iron form and source.

Soybean IDC severity depended on the soil and climatic conditions, and the experiment should be conducted for multiple growing seasons and locations before reaching a conclusion. Alternatively, preventive measures, such as IDC-resistant cultivars and applying iron fertilizers in the furrow, seem to be better options
