Brief Project Summary:

Controlling volunteer Roundup Ready (RUR) canola has increasingly been a major issue for not only soybean growers but for all farmers in general. It's persistence in the soil provides problems for many years and makes it crucial to control prior to seed production. Prior research has provided control measures for the earlier canola growth stages, but some less than ideal growing seasons do not allow for a timely application. The research will allow growers to have information on many of the herbicides registered in North Dakota and which products control volunteer RUR canola for their particular situation.

Final Project Results

Liberty is a contact type herbicide, is primarily nonselective, and controls most of all small broadleaf weeds. Liberty applied to small weeds (2-inch tall) provided good to excellent control. Surprisingly, other weed flushes did not emerge after small weeds were killed. This was probably due to rapid canopy closure from narrow row seeded beans. Much lower weed control occurred when Liberty was applied to weeds beyond two inches tall. Increasing the herbicide rate from 29 to 36 fluid ounces did not improve weed control to the level as when Liberty was applied to small weeds. Hot temperatures and high light environmental conditions enhanced activity of Liberty.

This data shows the utility and good weed management of using herbicides with several mechanisms of actions to delay weed resistance. This data also shows that application to small weeds is preferential to large weeds. All herbicide combinations improved weed control when compared to Liberty alone, except Prefix and Warrant

The United Soybean Research Retention policy will display final reports with the project once completed but working files will be purged after three years.
