In Ohio, the risk of agricultural phosphorus transport to surface water is assessed by the Ohio USDA-NRCS Phosphorus Index Assessment Procedure within the Nitrogen and Phosphorus Risk Assessment Procedures. The objective of this work is to validate and as possibly revise the Ohio Phosphorus Risk Index by establishing field-scale, edge-of-field monitoring facilities around Ohio.

In addition to phosphorus, the nitrogen (N) Leaching Risk Assessment Procedure will also be evaluated. Currently, the risk of N transport is confined to an evaluation of how much N may be moving into drainage tile flow or groundwater.
