During the last four years over 500 conventional breeding and commercial cultivars were screened for charcoal rot resistance and a germplasm DT 97-4290 that is moderately resistant to charcoal rot was released by the USDA/ARS. Unfortunately, this germplasm does not have the Roundup Ready (RR) trait necessary for the growers to maximize the full benefit of charcoal resistance. The majority of soybean growers in Tennessee, as well as the Midsouth, have shifted to using RR soybeans because of its advantage of improved weed control and a significant improvement in yield.
