Brief Project Summary:

Seed treatments will be examined for their role in the management of SDS and SCN. Bayer Crop Sciences fungicide seed treatment ILeVO was registered in 2015, and in response a number of companies are testing additional products.

We will test our current diagnostic assays as means of pre-plant SDS risk assessment. We will also continue our work to develop rapid diagnostic assays for use in the field.

We will work with the MSU soybean breeding program to screen mapping populations and AYT lines for SDS resistance in the field. SDS inoculum will be produced in the Chilvers laboratory for the inoculation of SDS field screening trials on the Agronomy farm. We will use our real-time PCR assay...

Information And Results
Final Project Results

1. Assess new seed treatments for SDS and SCN management
At the Decatur location we screen seed and in-furrow treatments for the management of SDS and SCN.
2. Develop a rapid SDS detection assay to improve the diagnoses of SDS and pre-plant risk assessment
We will assess our current qPCR diagnostic assay for use as a pre-plant SDS risk assessment tool. Develop an RPA assay to improve the speed of molecular diagnosis from half a day to 20 minutes.
3. Develop methods to rapidly phenotype soybean germplasm for resistance to SDS through real-time quantitative PCR and aerial imaging and image analysis
Utilize our real-time quantitative PCR assay to identify root rot resistance QTLs. Work with Xiaoming Liu and the MSU RS&GIS team to capture aerial images and analyze image files to improve phenotyping of breeding material and assessment of seed treatments.
4. Assist soybean breeders in evaluating breeding material
Produce SDS inoculum for on campus screening of germplasm. Coordinate screening of germplasm on campus in inoculated trials. Screen Dr. Craig Grau’s white mold germplasm for SDS resistance. Facilitate and coordinate screening of germplasm at Decatur.
Train Dr. Wang’s lab in rating of SDS plots.
5. Educate growers and CCA’s on biology and management of SDS

Information from this project was disseminated through summer and winter meetings. Additionally, a YouTube video was created to capture some of the impacts of Jie Wang’s thesis. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47pk2Y8W3-I
Through collaborative efforts an extension article was also created for SDS: http://cropprotectionnetwork.org/soybean/sds/

The United Soybean Research Retention policy will display final reports with the project once completed but working files will be purged after three years. And financial information after seven years. All pertinent information is in the final report or if you want more information, please contact the project lead at your state soybean organization or principal investigator listed on the project.
