Most farmers plant a single rate of soybean or corn seed across an entire field. Planting a single rate across an entire field does not take into account within-field variation leading to over- and under-seeding areas in the field. With the development of precision agriculture techniques, farmers now have the ability to make their farming operations more sustainable by using variable rate seeding (VRS) where seeding rate is either increased or decreased in zones of a field based on past crop yields and soil characteristics.
