Each year, around 200 commercial soybean varieties in Michigan Soybean Performance Trials and hundreds of soybean breeding lines are evaluated in field trials at nine locations throughout major soybean production areas in Michigan. In order to plant, manage, and harvest these field trials in time, two field technicians are needed. Every year during the planting and harvesting seasons, the two field technicians had to plant or harvest every non-rainy-day including weekends and had to work till late in the evenings to try to get the work done on time. When there are too few non-rainy days during planting and harvesting seasons such as in 2019, it is very critical to have two field technicians to plant and harvest the research plots. In addition to soybean performance trials and the breeding work, the field technicians were frequently asked to help planting or harvesting other MSPC funded research. It is therefore critical to keep the two field technicians hired to maintain our ability to conduct the field evaluations of soybean varieties for the growers. With the financial support from MSPC, we hired Robert Stoutenburg as a field technician to replace John Boyse, our first technician who has partial retired from the program due to his health. Robert played a critical role in planting, managing, and harvesting the soybean field trials. As expected, our ability to carry out field research has been significantly increased since we hired Robert. We propose to keep Robert hired and request funding to cover part of his salary and fringe benefit.
