Brief Project Summary:
The objectives of this project are to identify the optimum soybean seeding rate for three planting date windows and determine the cause of soybean self-thinning. In Ohio, soybeans are often planted the fourth week of May and into the first week of June or even later, due to wet weather. When soybeans are planted later, certain adjustments need to be made such as increasing the seeding rate. This study helps identify the optimum soybean seeding rate for four planting date timeframes: early May, late May, early June and late June.

Project Summary

The objectives of this project are to: 1) identify the optimum soybean seeding rate for three planting date windows, 2) determine the cause of soybean self-thinning, and 3) disseminate results to Ohio soybean farmers. In Ohio, soybeans are often planted the fourth week of May and into the first week of June (or even later) due to wet weather. When soybeans are planted later, certain adjustments need to be made such as increasing the seeding rate. This study will help identify the optimum soybean seeding rate for four planting date timeframes, early May, late May, early June, and late June. The first year of the study was conducted in 2020 with interesting results (see last page of attached pdf for brief summary). A second year of data is important since results can vary year-to-year depending on the weather.

The United Soybean Research Retention policy will display final reports with the project once completed but working files will be purged after three years. And financial information after seven years. All pertinent information is in the final report or if you want more information, please contact the project lead at your state soybean organization or principal investigator listed on the project.
