Two new Asian parasitoids are now attacking the soybean aphid in Minnesota. One is Aphelinus certus, which became established on its own, and the other is Aphelinus glycinis, which we started releasing in 2013. Aphelinus certus, is a generalist aphid parasitoid that attacks not only soybean aphid but other aphids, including pests and non-pests alike, whereas A. glycinis is a specialist and attacks only soybean aphid and a few of its close relatives. Either one of these species on its own has the potential to substantially reduce soybean aphid pressure in Minnesota and elsewhere in North America.
