Brief Project Summary:
The species complex of stink bugs in Virginia likely has changed with the invasive brown marmorated stink bug and the southern green stink bug potentially dominating now in soybeans. This project conducts a stink bug survey of soybeans across VA to document the current pest populations. Because these species have been shown to be more difficult to control than some other stink bugs, this research also evaluates insecticide efficacy in small plot field trials.

Information And Results
Project Summary

• Stink bugs are consistently one of the top insect pests of Virginia soybean
• We believe that the species complex of stink bugs has changed with the
invasive brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB) and the southern green stink bug
(SGSB) potentially dominating now in VA soybeans
• We wish to conduct a stink bug survey of soybeans across VA to document the
current pest populations
• Because BMSB and SGSB have been shown to be more difficult to control than
some other stink bugs, we also will evaluate insecticide efficacy in small plot field
trials conducted in VA.

Project Objectives

1. To survey Virginia soybean to determine the current stink bug species
composition and incidence
2. To evaluate insecticides for managing Virginia’s stink bug complex

Project Deliverables

An understanding of the current species complex of stink bugs found in
soybeans around Virginia.
Knowledge on the current effiacy of various insecticides to control stink bugs in
soybeans.

Benefit To Soybean Farmers

The United Soybean Research Retention policy will display final reports with the project once completed but working files will be purged after three years. And financial information after seven years. All pertinent information is in the final report or if you want more information, please contact the project lead at your state soybean organization or principal investigator listed on the project.
